During the Field Research several archives were consulted from foundations, libraries, museums, etc., in Helsinki, Espoo, Rovaniemi, Inari and Kilpisjärvi. Around two hundred documents specifically related with the monument plan were collected. Among them are one hundred photos of the Saivaara fell, a couple of drawings and a few texts that are the main body of the memorial plan’s process lead by Wirkkala. Around two dozens of newspaper articles of the time with critical reviews of the monument were also traced. Still regarding the specific documentation, should be highlighted the collection of cartographical data from the Lapland landscape and particularly from the Saivaara fell and its surroundings.
General bibliography was also consulted with the objective of better understand the background of the monument plan, such as the political circumstances of the time as well as the geographical and cultural context of the Lappish territory.
Afterwards it was undertaken an “immersion” in the “Lapland of Wirkkala”. During more than 40 days was part of the field research walk along dozens of kilometers over this territory through its main trails, lakes and mountains. In this phase it is important to underline the visit to the Saivaara fell made through a 35 km trek undertaken during two days. It was followed by a three days stage near and at the fell in order to closer understand the main issues of the monument plan. During this process hundreds of data from different natures were collected such as notes, sketches and photographs.
